Contraindications
Absolute Contraindications
Direct irradiation of the eyes
Risk of retinal damage. Protective eyewear is mandatory.
Known or suspected malignancy (over tumor sites)
Especially active cancer, as light may stimulate cellular activity.
Over the thyroid gland
Risk of altering thyroid function.
Pregnancy – over abdomen, pelvis, or low back
Safety for the fetus has not been established.
Relative Contraindications / Precautions
Photosensitive conditions
e.g., lupus erythematosus, porphyria.
Patients taking photosensitizing medications
e.g., tetracyclines, sulfonamides, isotretinoin, certain chemotherapy drugs.
Epilepsy
Especially with pulsed or flickering light near the head or neck.
Over hemorrhagic areas or active bleeding
May increase local circulation.
Over areas of active infection
Use with caution; avoid until infection is controlled unless clinically justified.
Over growth plates in children
Potential effect on bone growth.
Pacemaker or implanted electronic devices
Avoid direct exposure over device site (precautionary).
